Schools out for summer and it’s time to have fun. The kids will be at home and they’ll likely need a week or two to relax after a long year of learning.
The downtime, however, won’t last long and before you know it they’ll be telling you they’re bored.
It’s time to get out of the house and spend some time outside.
There’s no better place than the beach. Children enjoy their freedom on the beach and parents enjoy the peaceful sound of the waves and the warmth of the sun.
If you’re tired of being cooped up inside with the air conditioner on, consider a drive (or a flight) to the beach. You’re family will appreciate it.
In this article I’ve compiled a list of 11 reasons the beach is the perfect place for kids. It’s one of the few places that both kids and parents enjoy.
11 Reasons The Beach Is Perfect For Kids
-
Fresh Air
You might live in a busy city or you might live down a country road. Air quality has become a larger problem in the U.S. and many kids struggle with asthma and allergies.
In addition to the sun and surf, the beach offers a place with fresh air. The cool breeze that comes off the ocean picks up water and provides moist, refreshing air for us to breathe.
Long known for it’s therapeutic benefits coast air, combine with mineral-rich salt water can be great for our bodies.
If you reside in an area with poor air quality or high pollen counts, consider heading to the beach!
-
Gets Them Outside and Active
Going to the beach is truly an outdoor activity. It’s a great place to encourage activity and health because most people view the beach as a “relaxing” place to be.
The truth is that when most people conclude their beach day they’re exhausted. We make plans to sleep on our towel, read, and cool off in the water, but we usually end up running around, playing sports and getting tossed around by the waves.
Your kids will get a workout at the beach and they won’t even realize it!
-
Dirt. No Problem
Kids are usually instructed to stay out of the dirt. Parents don’t want dirt in the house and clothes can be ruined by soil and grass stains.
Going to the beach fixes that problem.
- Fewer clothes at the beach means less dirt
- The ocean provides a good rinse
- Sand doesn’t stain clothes
- 1 bathing suit = no much laundry
The beach is a huge sandbox and has a huge bathtub connected to it. Kids can get as dirty as they want and rinse off in the ocean (or under the beach showers) before heading home.
-
Swim All Day
At the beach, kids can swim all day. Kids love swimming, especially when there are waves to play in.
They’ll play for a while then take a break on their towel. Then they will head back to the water for another round.
The more they swim, the more tired they’ll be at night. Don’t forget to apply extra sunscreen for frequent swimmers (read more about the best sunscreen for kids).
-
Games On The Sand And In the Water
The beach is versatile and kids can choose to play in the sand or in the water. Not all kids can swim, but that won’t keep them from having fun.
They can play football, soccer, Frisbee, and tag. They can also play in the shallow water without a problem.
Kids that swim will enjoy the sporting options in the water. Skimboarding, boogieboard, and surfing are all popular water sports that kids can enjoy.

Great Visibility For Parents
Another reason the beach is the perfect place for kids is the visibility. There are few places we visit that don’t have obstacles to block our vision. The beach is one of those places.
There aren’t walls, trees, cars, or other barriers that will cause us to lose sight of our kids.
When at the beach you can let your kids run down the beach without losing sight of them. You’ll even be able to keep an eye out for them in the water.
-
Lifeguards On Duty
At most beaches, you’ll have assistance. Lifeguards are present to protect and serve people on the beach and in the water.
Of course, you’ll be watching your kids, but so will the lifeguards – especially if they are swimming.
Don’t worry, if you miss something a lifeguard will have your back!
-
Can Fly A Kite
Windy days at the beach aren’t very enjoyable. The wind kicks up sand that can blow in your eyes.
But kids won’t mind as long as they have a kite. Flying a kite is the perfect activity for a windy day at the beach.
If you’re planning a trip, consider packing a kite so you’re prepared for all conditions at the beach.

Can Talk As Loud As They Want
When indoors, parents are constantly reminding kids to use their indoor voice. Yelling and other loud behavior are unappreciated in a household, but at the beach it’s not a problem.
Your kids can speak loudly, sing, and yell. It won’t be a problem.
-
Great Place To Learn Social Skills
If your child likes to socialize, the beach is the perfect place to be. At the beach, there are kids of all ages and it’s easy to make friends. It could occur over a game of soccer or building a sandcastle fortress.
Set up your spot on the beach near other families and chances are your child will make some new friends.
-
Dig and Build Using Sand
One of the best beach activities for kids is building a sandcastle. There aren’t a lot of places you can create a sandcastle (even a sandbox doesn’t have wet sand needed for building).
Kids can build up or dig down as far as possible. Be sure to bring a few buckets and shovels to make their building adventure a reality.
Conclusion
The beach is truly the perfect place for kids. It’s a healthy place to be and it will bring a smile to both kids and their parents.
While parents enjoy relaxing on the sand, kids have an endless amount of activities to try. They can swim, dig, play catch, meet new friends, and work on their tan.
If you’re tired of being cooped up in a hot house with the air conditioner on, head to the beach for a day that everyone in your family will enjoy.
